American guinea pig pet portraits

The American is the cavy people picture when they hear the word. A short coat, a broad face, a calm seated pose — the easiest cavy to paint because the whole animal reads at a glance.

Why the short coat helps

A smooth coat lets the body shape do the work. The stocky barrel, the broad rounded head, the small ears set wide — none of it is hidden under fur. Painted media handles short coats with subtle sheen and shadow rather than directional brushwork, which suits the species' compact form. The face stays the focal point in every style.

Color is where it gets specific

Americans come in solid (self), agouti, dutch (white with colored ends), bicolor, tortoiseshell, brindle, and roan. A solid black cavy in Watercolor reads almost like a Persian cat — pure silhouette against soft wash. An agouti golden cavy carries warm depth into Garden and Vineyard. Tortoiseshell and brindle Americans become Pop Art subjects because the color blocks are already graphic.
